Portasoft Since 1945 -
Certified Water Specialists
Like many servicemen returning home from World War II, Omer Miller and John Nooney had plans to start their own business. They saw a need to improve the quality of water piped into local homes and businesses. After developing a unique piece of equipment to do just that, the two launched The Portasoft Company, which today, is one of the oldest, largest, most successful water treatment dealers in America.
Since 1945, Portasoft has grown dramatically in size and greatly expanded the scope of its products, while staying firmly focused in the water treatment industry. Customers include thousands of residential, commercial and industrial users in the New York metropolitan area. Homeowners and hospitals, and even some municipalities use products manufactured by Portasoft, or the services the company supplies.
Today’s co-owners of the company, Ron Kent, a former executive with Johnson & Johnson, and Byron Miller, Omer’s son, report that Portasoft now has over 15,000 active clients, and continues to develop equipment and methods to make water taste, feel, and work better. At their Union County, NJ office, the two recently spoke about the company.
“The water one receives from purveyors, usually water utilities, is relatively clean and biologically safe. But in order for water to be more useful and efficient for home uses such as bathing, cleaning, and drinking, it requires some level of improvement, said Miller.
"And as we humans are about 70 percent water, it stands to reason that our bodies would benefit from the best possible drinking water,” adds Miller.
The partners agree that while water treatment has become more sophisticated over the last 50 years, many of the basic processes remain the same. “It’s still a matter of making an acceptable product, into a superior product,” says Kent. Statistics indicate that almost 15 million households in America now have water treatment systems. Builders and remodelers who want to get ahead of their competition are installing water treatment equipment and promoting it as an amenity, rather than as a solution to “bad water”.
Kent added, “Our basic objective is to educate the consumer. To make sure that whatever they buy or rent from Portasoft, is the right equipment for the right application. There isn’t one single water treatment device that addresses all problem water concerns. So what we try to do is identify the customer’s problem, how it can be remedied, and present logical alternatives.”
Miller says, “The biggest problem in this industry is the misapplication of equipment or method. You see, the first thing we sell is quality water. The second thing we sell is our experience in supplying that quality water, and the third thing we sell is the hardware. The reason a customer should buy from Portasoft is because we’ve got the experience to apply the correct solution.”
With over 100,000 clients since the company was founded, Portasoft can justly lay claim to broad experience in the industry. Kent noted, “Problems run the gamut from hard water, which reduces the ability of water to get things clean, to color, odor, and taste problems, water that causes stains, and water that corrodes the pipes in your home or business. All of these are problems we’ve had a great deal of experience with, and know how to correct.”
“But we also help manufacturers and hospitals get the purest possible water for their unique needs,” says Miller. “We treat the water for a company that manufactures gelatin capsules that pharmaceuticals are encased in." “Obviously, these capsules have to be as pure as possible to avoid interaction with the drug inside,” said Kent.
“Hospitals that perform renal dialysis also require ultra pure water, and we have equipment installed at a number of hospitals throughout the metropolitan area,” adds Miller. “Deionization, adsorption, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and ultra-violet light purification are some of the methods we use.” Kent added that these same technologies are used on a smaller scale for drinking water systems and general water improvement in homes.
Portasoft is among the pioneers of the water treatment industry. Over the years, the company has developed several processes and pieces of equipment that do a more efficient job of treating water. The company now holds 9 patents on water treatment equipment, and has many “firsts” to its credit, including being the first in the industry to offer a cabinet model water softener.
Both Miller and Kent stay active in their industry, participating in the National Certification Programs offered by the Water Quality Association, a national organization of which Portasoft is a member. Both men and their employees attend continuing education programs relative to their business. Miller and Kent are residents of Union County, New Jersey where both are also very active in their communities.
